New Building

Farlington is expanding! Work is progressing well on the new Courtyard Building which will significantly enhance the provision for all our pupils. This development, which opens in September 2008, will allow us to offer a co-educational Nursery Class, with a dedicated playground to be shared with Reception girls. Further new facilities will include a multi-purpose hall for assemblies, performances and PE, a kitchen, a library and a music room. For further information about registering for the Nursery Class, please ring Emma Healy on 01403 254967 or email her at healye@farlingtonschool.net

Oh! What A Lovely War

Farlington’s annual senior school production this year was Oh! What A Lovely War. This was performed at Farlington in our recently transformed Studio which now boasts a portable proscenium theatre. Director, Julia Martin, effectively combined pathos and black comedy to give an intense portrayal of the folly – and the gallantry – of The Great War. A stark but evocative set and some excellent technical effects contrasted with the colourful costumes, a mix of military and end of pier, to set both the mood and period. ‘It is a tribute to this talented cast that they entertained and made us laugh; and as the poppies floated down in the final scene, they made us think and they made us cry.”

Wear a Hat Day

Hats of all shapes and sizes were worn by the girls and staff in February for Wear A Hat Day. The idea was the brainchild of Catrina Gates in Year 9 who is having treatment for a brain tumour at The Royal Marsden Hospital and wanted to raise money to support this wonderful hospital. Pupils contributed at least £2 each for the privilege of wearing hats of all descriptions, from swimming hats and shower caps to bowler hats and berets. One member of staff, who mentioned that she didn’t possess a hat, was presented with one handmade by the girls, transforming her into a Disney Princess for the day!

Young Enterprise

This year’s Young Enterprise company has launched a different, more ecological enterprise – The Lilypad Project. This non-profit organisation, aims to build a jetty in Farlington’s lake to enable students to use the facility for ‘pond dipping’. This facility will be made available to other schools in the area with the intention of engaging students in science and conservation from an early age and raising their environmental awareness.

In the future The Lilypad Project also plans to build an outdoor classroom next to the Jetty, to ensure maximum use of the facility. This classroom will be used to analyse the pond specimens and store equipment.

Our Young Enterprise team recently won the awards for the Most Innovative Produce or Service and for Best Reports and Accounts at the North Sussex Area Finals.

Portraits from Life

Our Sixth Form art students recently enjoyed a day at the studio of local artist, Emily Ball, in Patridge Green. It was an experimental workshop of portrait drawing, working from a model. The students produced an amazing volume of work, discovering fresh ways of looking and new techniques for recording.

Globe Trip

To enhance their experience of Shakespeare and ‘Macbeth’, Year 6 visited the Globe Theatre.  It was a once in a life time opportunity with the day culminating in performing their acting workshop on the actual stage. Passing members of the public were very appreciative and the girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Victorian Day in Year 6

Teachers and girls alike went back in time for one day of their school life.  Chalk boards and copy books were to be seen, drilling and deportment on the timetable.  Everyone looked the genuine article in their costumes but decided that they preferred being  at school now rather than in the Victorian times.
