Salters Festival of Chemistry
On Wednesday 13th June, 4 Year 8 girls attended the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry event at Brighton University. They were welcomed by Professor Hal Sosabowski, and then addressed by Professor Tony Beezer, who imparted from excellent advice about careers in science. In the morning they took part in the Salters’ Challenge, where they used two chemistry techniques to solve a crime. After lunch they completed a short quiz before the University Challenge, where they were left to their own devices to create a black powder from the chemicals they were given. They completed both challenges successfully, and were the first group to have made the black powder. The day was completed by a spectacular demonstration, performed by Professor Sosabowski and ‘Doctor Dave,’ showcasing some interesting and explosive reactions.
