EAL

EAL (English as an Additional Language)

At Farlington we welcome international students and provide for the educational and cultural needs of girls from all over the world. We have a small number of boarding places for overseas students, and we make every effort to help them integrate. They participate fully in academic and extra curricular activities while improving their English and gaining high grades in the English education system.

Overseas students at Farlington are well motivated and keen to learn. They come from professional families world-wide and usually go on to study at top universities, in the UK and abroad, after obtaining excellent GCSE and A-level results. The Farlington community embraces the rich cultural diversity of its students.

EAL stands for "English as an Additional Language". All international students have three or four EAL lessons a week. These lessons focus on reading, writing, listening and speaking skills as well as English grammar. The exams offered are the Cambridge EAL Examinations; these exams are split into five levels depending upon the student's level of proficiency. Those students in the UK for the whole or final part of their education will be given all the support necessary to ensure they can sit their GCSE and A level exams.

"EAL helps us to understand more clearly the English used for our A level subjects"
Lily from China

"My spoken English has become more fluent because my confidence has grown. My grammar has also improved a lot." Kristina from Germany

"My accent has improved a lot. In the EAL classroom there are many books at different levels of English which you may borrow. I have enjoyed reading simplified versions of English classics." Lilia from Spain

"EAL teachers also help you with your coursework, projects or just general homework and all the EAL teachers are very friendly so we are not afraid to ask questions." Lorraine from Hong Kong
