Preston Manor
On Tuesday 13th September 2011, girls from Prep 1 and 2 visited Preston Manor and Hove Museum dressed as Victorian girls. When they arrived, they were greeted by Trevor, the Butler, and Rosemary, the Housemaid. The girls were given a tour of the entrance hall, drawing room and dining room of the house learning about how each room was used by the family who lived there in Victorian times. They then went to see the difference between the bedroom of the ‘Lady’ of the house and that of one of the maids and were surprised at the differences. The girls were taught how to dust, clean and polish and make Victorian firelighters and then went to discover what life was like ‘below stairs’. The girls were taught how to squeeze oranges and lemons and make traditional lemonade using bicarbonate of soda. They also cored apples and filled them with sultanas ready for baking. Churning milk was another task on the agenda. In the washroom they learnt how to grate soap, use a posser and a mangle and about flat and slug irons. After eating lunch, the group made its way to Hove Museum where they were able to handle an array of Victorian artefacts. Each table contained a mystery object and the girls made great guesses about what they were. Staff received compliments at both locations about how wonderfully behaved the girls had been and everyone had a fantastic day where all the girls learnt a huge amount about life in the Victorian times.
