British Museum

Prep 3S enjoyed a wonderful trip to the British Museum on Tuesday 15th November 2011. The girls have been studying the ancient Egyptians and really enjoyed looking at the Rosetta Stone in Room 4, as they have been learning all about it.

This gallery also contains a number of statues of pharaohs and ancient Egyptian deities (gods and goddesses) together with monumental pieces of stone architecture such as columns and carved wall reliefs. At the north end of the gallery is a range of massive stone sarcophagi (bases and lids).

The girls thought that the statues were amazing and they could not believe how big they were! They loved being symbol detectives, looking for all of the different symbols, for example, ankhs, cartouches and lotus flowers. This activity encouraged the girls to identify a range of common ancient Egyptian symbols associated with the pharaoh and royal power in a variety of contexts.
