Faculty of Languages

The Faculty of Languages at Farlington comprises English Language, English Literature, French, German, Latin and Spanish.

Having our rich and wonderful native language, a hugely significant classical language, and three other modern European and world languages under one umbrella, has clear cross-curricular learning advantages for our students. Faculty staff work together to ensure that we maximise those opportunities and help students to understand that languages not only enable us to communicate thoughts and ideas, but also foster cultural ties and understanding, and forge friendships and business relationships.

Throughout history, many have reflected on the importance of language. For instance, the American linguist Benjamin Whorf noted that language shapes thoughts and emotions, determining one’s perception of reality. The British philosopher John Stuart Mill said that "Language is the light of the mind" while Lionel Groulx, a Canadian historian from Québec, put it this way: "La clef magique qui donne accès aux plus hautes richesses de la culture, c’est la langue." (Language is the magic key which gives access to the highest riches of culture).

I invite you to read our Faculty subject pages to discover more about the individual languages experienced by girls at Farlington.
