Cookery
Cookery gives pupils skills that will be valuable throughout their lives, and is taught from Year 7 to Year 9. Theory is supported by practical sessions in which girls learn new skills and develop existing ones. Practical work develops basic food handling skills and hygiene, and throughout the course healthy eating and healthy options are discussed, including how to adapt recipes to include seasonal ingredients. Girls learn about nutritional values and functional properties of ingredients through practical and theory work based around why different people need different types of diet. Knowledge from science on conduction, convection and radiation is applied. The emphasis is placed on the girls gaining confidence in handling and preparing food safely, working in groups to prepare meals and developing their cooking skills.
The girls are encouraged to try the foods they have prepared and the meals are taken home to be enjoyed by their families. The girls also prepare party food, a picnic and cuisine from other parts of the world, having researched and designed a menu to reflect the theme. They invite a group of friends to enjoy the completed meal, which is enjoyed by all.Girls also develop recipes and menus for the annual Masterchef Competition organised by the local Rotary Club. They compete to devise the best menu and to select the teams that will represent the school.
