Drama

"All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players" Shakespeare, "As you Like It".

Drama is creative, vibrant and good fun. We aim to develop a girl’s awareness of the many styles, techniques and material of the theatre. Each lesson enables them to take part in a variety of performed pieces as they learn and hone skills and techniques. All approaches and ideas are encouraged as girls find their own performance style. Scripts from a variety of writers are consistently used to frame the pupils work, but great value is also placed upon freedom of creative expression and improvisation.

In Years 7 – 9 pupils explore a wealth of dramatic material and learn about Theatre from far flung global cultures as well as those closer to home. They also develop a range of skills based upon Naturalistic Drama, Expressionism and Musical Theatre. They are constantly asked to be creative in producing their own material as a response to what they have learned, and are given the opportunity to take to the stage every lesson. They use scripts to focus on key acting techniques and styles, and apply this influence to original work. A well-stocked theatre wardrobe is always available, as well as lighting, sound and props equipment in our Studio. In Year 9, students create an entire original production from scratch over the course of the summer term as part of their Performing Arts unit. Drama in Years 7 to 9 is a strong bridge to GCSE but also really good fun for all involved.Girls choosing GCSE Drama can expect an exciting challenge. The course is broken into three varied units in which the students apply and develop skills in a programme of study that runs for the duration of the course. School productions are open to all who wish to audition. Two plays are staged by the Senior School each year and include collaborations with the Music Department. These productions are a celebration of the talents of the girls and are a real opportunity for budding performers of all ages to shine. Also highly valued are the young theatre technicians and backstage crew that help us every year. Whatever the skill, there is a creative opportunity for your daughter!
