EAL
(English as an Additional Language)
We welcome international students and provide for the educational and cultural needs of girls from all over the world. We have a small number of boarding places for overseas students, and we make every effort to help them integrate. They participate fully in academic and extra curricular activities while improving their English and gaining high grades in the English education system.
Overseas students at Farlington are well motivated and keen to learn. They come from professional families world-wide and usually go on to study at top universities, in the UK and abroad, after obtaining excellent GCSE and A-level results. The Farlington community embraces the rich cultural diversity of its students.
For those girls for whom English is a second (or sometimes a third) language we provide additional curriculum support appropriate to their needs, taught by specialist EAL teachers. Lessons focus on reading, writing, listening and speaking skills as well as English grammar, and also enable the pupil to study the cultural background of modern Britain. Cambridge EAL Examinations are offered; these exams are split into five levels depending upon the student's level of proficiency. Those students in the UK for the whole or final part of their education will be given all the support necessary to ensure they can sit their GCSE and A level exams.
Some EAL girls are only here for a short time of one term or less. The EAL teachers work to ensure that they benefit from their time with us by encouraging spoken English through discussion of news events, simple grammar exercises and reading.
