English

William Morris famously said ‘Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.’ English performs the same two vital functions; it allows us to live efficiently and happily, and it nourishes our aesthetic sensibilities. It is the medium through which we express ourselves and the means by which we understand others and the world around us. Literature gives us access to the minds of great writers, and through reading we can live other lives, visit far flung places and experience life in earlier (or later) times. Punctuation can save lives (Let's eat Grandma!); reading enriches them.
