German
German is the most widely spoken language in Europe and has 120 million native speakers around the globe. Germany is the economic powerhouse of the European Union and has the fourth largest economy in the world. 1 in 10 books on the planet is published in German and, in the number of books published, Munich is second only to New York. German-speaking countries have a rich cultural heritage. 10 Nobel prizes for literature have been awarded to German, Austrian, and Swiss German authors. The world of classical music is inseparable from the names of Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Strauss, and Wagner, to name but a few German-speaking composers.
German enjoys special status at Farlington, in that it is our designated extra-curricular language, which forms part of our Gifted & Talented programme. Students who are good linguists, or who have a special interest in German, are able to take it up as an additional language in Year 9. This is a modern, relevant and fun course that takes its participants from beginners to GCSE level in just three years.
With French and Spanish being offered in the main curriculum, this means that Farlington girls have the enviable opportunity to take up to three modern foreign languages at GCSE, as well as Latin, if they wish. What’s more, as German takes place after school, the hours can count towards the Skills section of the popular Duke of Edinburgh Award.
