History

‘To experience is to understand’.

Simon Schama, the Historian and Government Adviser, strongly advocates the inclusion of History in the school curriculum. To quote ... “unless they can be won to History, their imagination will be held hostage in the cage of eternal Now ... ... ... they will remain innocent of whence they have come and correspondingly unconcerned or, worse, fatalistic about where they might end up”.

At Farlington we echo these thoughts. Gone are the days of learning lists of dates by rote! Instead, students are fully engaged in researching, understanding and piecing together the past in order to better understand both the present and the evolving human landscape. History offers many opportunities for interactive teaching such as role play, debating and visits to sites of historical interest (Lewes, Ironbridge, Belgium, Berlin have been included in recent visits). Experience is crucial throughout the teaching of History and we encourage you to feel fully engaged in your work. We aim to develop an informed and enquiring mind which challenges dogma and develops an understanding of historical events.

History is a very popular subject at GCSE (82% A and A* in 2011) and many of our A level students have continued the subject at University level. Take the first step and join this group of notable history graduates; Penelope Lively (author), Simon Mayo, Jeremy Bowen (BBC presenter and correspondent), Ali G and Jonathan Ross (media), Gordon Brown, Chris Patten (politics), Lord Sainsbury (marketing), Antonia Fraser (broadcaster).
