PSHCE
Personal, Social, Health & Citizenship Education
All students in the Senior School follow a Life Skills programme which is designed to be age appropriate and cover all aspects of P.S.H.E. and Citizenship.
At Farlington the chronological nature of the course and the value placed on the subject by students and staff allows for a generous time provision within the curriculum. This allows us to provide the girls with valuable life skills and experiences beyond the compulsory state provision. Topics are delivered by Form Tutors, Staff Topic Experts and External Speakers in a timetabled session each week. The students can be learning “hands on” first aid techniques from the school nurses or aspects of personal safety from a member of the local constabulary.
All the topics fall into four overarching categories: Personal Development, Healthy Minds and Bodies, Community Awareness and Development, and Economic Health. Each year group covers topics in these fields during the year. The use of a dedicated P.S.H.E. and Citizenship resource as the core of the programme ensures that the course fits well with both the S.E.A.L. and “Every Child Matters” government initiatives.
As the students progress to the more senior years, the programme gains an additional dimension as it helps the students to consider their future options and careers.
The Head of Life Skills co-ordinates and develops the overall programme throughout the senior school, working closely with the whole pastoral team. Students are encouraged to give regular feedback so that the programme can be developed and enhanced.
Life skills are taken seriously at Farlington as we recognise that in modern society students need significant E.Q. skills in addition to their academic qualifications to lead healthy, happy, satisfying and successful lives.
