Religious Studies

Modern Britain is a multicultural society. It is also seems to be a society obsessed with celebrity and trivia. Communication is instant and young people are bombarded with images and attitudes that force them to ‘grow up’ before they have properly matured.

To help young people find their own path through all this, it is more important than ever that they have an opportunity to explore and reflect on those things that are of more fundamental importance:

Who am I?
What do I believe in?
How should my beliefs affect what I do?
What values do I have?
How should I treat other people?
Why do other people have different beliefs and values?
How should I respond to them?

In Years 7 and 8, Religious Studies is not delivered as a separate subject but as part of the Lifeskills course, touching on some of these big questions.

In Years 9 and 10, all girls study RS Philosophy and Ethics as a short course (half) GCSE. Although there are some references to the other great monotheistic religions, Judaism and Islam, we focus on Christian and secular views. Girls need to understand both views and to be able to articulate and defend their own beliefs, whatever those may be.

Topics covered include Good and Evil, Religion and Science, Human Relationships, Medical Ethics – there could hardly be a more interesting or more important course of study. For girls who want to explore such issues further, there is the opportunity to study after school and take the full course GCSE.
