Sociology
'We have been the benefactors of our cultural heritage and the victims of our cultural narrowness.' Stanley Kripper
Sociology looks at the way that we organise our world and our lives. It challenges “common sense” ideas and makes us question our own preconceptions.
- Some believe that people in power decide
- Some believe that it can never change
- Some believe that it is the same in every society
- Some believe that everything that is at fault in our society is caused by men
These ideas are only some that are considered and you will use a variety of sources to consider their validity. Teaching methods are varied and you will be encouraged to discuss your ideas in a supportive classroom environment. You will learn to produce thoughtful evidentially based essays and to evaluate all forms of evidence, whether it is from a traditional text book or a Blog from the Prime Minister.
The chance to study and make sense of the complicated society around us, and to gain an insight into our own identity makes the subject lively and exciting. Contrary to former opinions of Sociology, it is a subject that is valued highly by Further Education for its development of students’ analytical and essay writing skills.
Sociology is offered at GCSE and at A Level.
"I'm really glad my daughter studies Sociology; before we did not discuss very much and now we have conversations about all aspects of modern life. I really like it when she opens my eyes to an idea I had not considered before."
