Textiles
Are you the next Chloe, Stella McCartney or Vivienne Westwood? Do you have a flair for combining colours and textures to achieve a certain look? Are you itching to redesign your wardrobe/bedroom/parents’ house?!!
Textiles are present in all aspects of our lives from clothing, accessories and interior design to industry. It is a very creative and exciting subject that we offer at GCSE and A level. The course is introducing you to the world of fashion and interior design, teaching you basic skills in Years 8 and 9, leading to more advanced techniques for GCSE and A level.
All girls are introduced to Textiles in Year 8 when you will have a 10 week block of lessons.
You will be taught the basic elements of design and the use of colour, both of which lay the foundations for your future creations. You will learn how to use a sewing machine to make a tie-dye cushion and will be encouraged to improve your practical skills.
In Year 9, you can opt to continue with Textiles, although you can choose to study the subject at GCSE if you have not studied it in Year 9. You will study Fashion, researching several contemporary designers to build up a portfolio of work. You will use a variety of techniques including batik and printing to create colour in your fabrics which you can then use to create your own design.
At GCSE, you will follow the AQA Art and Design (Textiles) course, which is designed to encourage creativity, imagination and the practical skills for communicating ideas through the study of Fashion and Interior Design. The course offers scope for the study of contemporary designers, and Textiles in other cultures, as well as an experimental approach to the subject.
