Faculty of Social Sciences
"Man, the molecule of society, is the subject of social science". Henry Charles Carey
The Faculty of Social Sciences encompasses the subjects that allow you to study aspects of the distant past alongside more recent historical events, leading to an understanding of the diverse and complex nature of the modern day. They give you an insight into the nature of the individual as well as the interaction of groups within society and prepare you for the challenges you will meet in later life.
Subjects available in the Faculty are: History, Geography, Religious Studies, Sociology, Classical Civilisation, Psychology and Business Studies.
The subjects link well together providing cross curricular advantages and allow you to study an idea from many different perspectives. If we consider, for example, the topic of Health Provision, the historical aspects could be considered in Classical Civilisation and History, whereas the Sociologists would consider the reasons behind inequality in Health Provision and the concept of Health as a social construct. The Psychologists may develop the concept of Health further in their consideration of the mind, whilst the Geographers may examine Heath provision as a concept globally. In Business Studies, case studies of companies involved in this field could be considered especially in relation to the idea of Health Care Provision as a business opportunity, and in Religious Studies the ethics of how you choose to distribute the limited funds available to provide Health Provision and if profit for individual companies should be involved, would offer an opportunity for a challenging discussion.
Faculty staff are passionate about their subjects and relish the chance to pass on that passion to you, the student. Many of the teachers work in more than one discipline, and this further enhances the close and dynamic collaboration between the team. This allows you not only to experience a variety of different teaching methods within the classroom but to benefit from a committed team of staff dedicated to inspiring their interests beyond the classroom with visits to educationally relevant events and places.
All the subjects provide you with the opportunity to develop transferable skills in the fields of research, analysis, evaluation and communication; I hope that you will be enthused by what is on offer!
