Mathematics
Mathematics is the study of patterns abstracted from the world around us – therefore it is clearly a very relevant subject with thousands of applications in almost all aspects of life. The Mathematics department therefore aims to encourage an appreciation of the power, purpose and relevance of mathematics. Students are encouraged to understand the value and usefulness of mathematics in their lives.
Key stage 3 All girls in years 7 to 9 have four periods of Mathematics each week, and they are put into ability sets from the start of year 7. Girls are encouraged to develop their independent learning skills and assess their progress; whilst being expected to know and remember facts. At this stage we keep language simple, consolidate regularly and build confidence through regular revision and practice. Skills are developed through a variety of experiences – investigations, practical work, group projects, use of computers, games, exposition by the teacher, discussion and text book exercises.

Key stage 4 The top two sets take Edexcel Higher Tier IGCSE Mathematics at the end of year 11. Selected girls sit the examination early in November of year 11 and then study an AS module, taken at the end of the year. The IGCSE course includes some calculus and provides an excellent foundation for those wishing to follow an A level Mathematics course. Girls, who find this subject more difficult, follow the AQA modular GCSE course.

UKMT Mathematics challenges Selected girls compete in the individual competitions at junior, intermediate and senior levels. We regularly achieve gold, silver and bronze awards at all three levels. Those who perform exceptionally well can compete in the follow-up Olympiad or Kangaroo competitions.
